How Many Ways Are There to Detox?

What is detoxification?

It’s only really in the last 10 years or so, that detoxification is the term has been used in alternative and holistic medicine circles in the West.

It is very difficult for Western doctors to recognise or approve treatments in which they have not been trained. There are so many hoaxers and scam artists out there. They can sometimes pop-up in western mainstream medical circles also.

But, the basic practice of detoxification has its roots in traditional Chinese medicine, and has been practised thousands of years. Indeed, it has been practised also in ancient Egypt, the Indian subcontinent, and throughout Asia. A form of reflexology has been passed down through generations of Cherokee Indians.

So what is detoxification all about?

A body is exposed to toxins everywhere we go. They are in the food we eat, they are in the air we breathe, and throughout the environment in which we live. Detoxification is all about trying to cleanse the body of these toxins, and mitigate the effects of further exposure.

How many ways are there to detox? Its really hard to know. And new methods seem to be born every week. The most prominent detoxes include detox diets, which would have an element of fasting and supplements. Detox exercise, meditation, and yoga can be practised for bodily cleansing. Salt bathing, as well as aromatherapy, and skin brushing techniques are used as part of new age detox methods.

I know there are many sceptics when it comes to alternative medicines. This is because most alternative medicine practitioners do not have to be licensed, so there isn’t the same standing as there would be in conventional medicine.

I think one must keep an open mind about these things. There are many things in this world that do not stand up very well to scrutiny. For instance, look at yin and yang. This is all about a person’s energy fields and trying to keep them balanced. I believe in this. Yet I have no proof that it exists.

I think many medical practices performed today, both in conventional and the alternative medical world, are dangerous. Take a look at somebody who has been in for plastic surgery that has gone wrong. Sanity gone mad. Why would somebody put themselves under the surgeon’s knife for the sake of appearing to look younger? I find this to be quite mental. But everyone has a choice. I just think that people should put more effort into feeling younger instead of trying to look younger. Colonic irrigation is another dangerous practice. Of course there is no need for such things. Human beings have survived for a long time without having to have a tube inserted into their rectum, to clean out intestines that are already self-cleaning.

I have come to the conclusion that many detoxification methods are psychological. They make you feel good, if you relax and believe. Exactly the same as a good long soak in the bath makes you feel good, or a massage, or a huge big belly laugh. It comes down to yin and yang, you must have your mind, body and spirit in alignment to have a feeling of total well-being.
